Skin permeation and/or penetration enhancement is a daunting challenge for formulation scientists developing products for topical applications. From creating simple indications that treat acne to developing creams that deliver hormones for replacement therapy, overcoming the skin barrier has never been easy. Based on the indication, a formulator must develop a product that will carry bioactive molecules deep inside the skin, or even to the systemic circulation, using enhancers that can improve permeation and/or penetration but not interfere with the structural integrity of the skin. From a formulator's perspective, overcoming the skin barrier is definitely more than skin deep. Read the article.
